Why we painted our ceiling black

We took a very non-traditional step but hey, our ceilings are 14 feet tall and if it’s going to be that dramatic why not just go with it? We had the popcorn ceiling removed before we moved into the house so it was needing to be painted anyways.

This is how the home looked when we virtually toured it. In the photos you can see how the walls look gray but in real life these walls were a pinky sand beige. It was very surprising and matches the light pink counter tops.

When we got to our house (the very first time seeing it) the popcorn had been removed but hadn’t been painted yet. We thought, we would try and save some money by doing it ourselves. Unfortunately, we ended up just paying for a second person to come out, lightly retexture the ceiling, and paint it for us. Lesson learned, if you’re going to pay someone to do a job, just have them do the whole job. Especially if it’s something you’ve never done before.

We picked the most popular black paint I could find, Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams. Paired with Alabaster (a white paint color) also by Sherwin Williams. Our living, dining, kitchen is a fairly open area so the black ceiling covers only those areas. The rooms, bathrooms, and closets are all in Alabaster.

The reason we were specific about the white color we wanted on the ceilings is because I knew I would want some walls white and I didn’t want them to be different white paint colors. They are different sheens but they are the same color!

All of our ceiling paints are a flat paint and the rest of the house is in eggshell.
